Cancer occurs when normal cells become cancerous cells that multiply and spread throughout the body.

It can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells.

Normally, cells follow instructions provided by genes. Our genes set down rules for cells to follow, such as when to start and stop growing. Cancerous cells ignore these rules, and instead will multiply uncontrollably and have the ability to move around.

While normal cells are programmed to die, cancerous cells ignore those directions. Additionally, normal cells do not grow as fast as cancerous ones.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, and it is a disease that affects all ages.

Breast

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer. It occurs when breast cells mutate and become cancerous cells that multiply and form tumors. Healthcare providers may treat breast cancer with surgery to remove tumors or treatment to kill cancer cells.

Breast cancer typically affects women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB) aged 50 years and older, but it can also affect men and people assigned male at birth (AMAB), as well as younger women.

Lung

Colorectal

How is cancer diagnosed?

What are the 4 stages of cancer?
