Body Composition with DXA Scan
The advanced body composition assessment provides information about body composition in eye-opening visual detail.
The advanced report provides a comprehensive look at the body, including bone, fat, muscle imbalances and more. This advanced diagnostic tool can measure the amount and distribution of lean tissue mass, fat mass, and bone mineral density, providing valuable information about an individual’s metabolic health, risk for chronic diseases, and physical function.
InvestMed’s proactive body composition screenings can be used to screen for calcium build-up in major blood vessels, and measure both subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin) and visceral fat (fat that surrounds the organs in the abdominal cavity), which can both be associated with diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and more.
Advanced Body Composition Assessment
Accurate measurement of body composition provides valuable information for assessing, monitoring the human body.
This advanced diagnostic tool can evaluate your levels of physical fitness, deliver precise measurements of segmental body fat and muscle distribution, and assess your risk for developing osteoporotic fractures.
The DEXA Scan is a quick, low dose X-ray exam that measures the three main tissues of the human body: fat, lean mass, and bone. Results show you:
- Overall body fat, lean tissue (muscle), bone weight and percentages
- Breakdowns for both legs, arms and your torso
- DEXA scan image showing where your body fat and muscle is distributed
- Visceral fat (the dangerous fat around organs)

What To Expect From A Dexa Scan
Before The Scan
A technician performs the scan on an outpatient basis. A person may need to remove any metal objects that they are wearing, such as jewelry and eyeglasses.
At the start of the scan, the person lies on their back on the exam table. The technician places the imaging device above them and the X-ray generator below them.
During The Scan
During the procedure, the imaging arm moves slowly over the person’s body while a beam of low-dose energy passes through them. It is crucial to remain still throughout the scan.
The technician will scan the hips, spine and other bones that are common locations of fractures in people with osteoporosis.
After The Scan

FAQ
What causes visceral fat?
A caloric surplus can result in excess visceral fat. Unsurprisingly, visceral fat develops as a result of adopting unhealthy lifestyle habits. Some of these factors include:
- Little or no exercise or avoiding functional exercises that build muscle
- Poor diet high in carbohydrates, saturated fat, and empty calories
- Poor sleep habits
- Stress
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Smoking
For people living sedentary lifestyles, it is quite easy to pick up several of these unhealthy habits. Over time, these habits will lead to increased amounts of body fat, including visceral fat.
How accurate are DEXA scans?
DEXA scans offer a high degree of precision and accuracy. Medical experts consider DEXA scans to be an accurate test for diagnosing osteoporosis.
Unlike x-ray machines, DEXA machines are checked daily for their ability to measure bone mineral accurately, and no two DXA machines are exactly alike. That is why your healthcare provider will insist that you have all of your DEXA tests done on the same machine.
Why is body composition important to measure?
Most diet and fitness goals focus on weight loss or gain, overlooking that two people of the same sex and body weight may look completely different from each other because they have different body compositions. Measuring your body composition will tell you your own body’s unique makeup and help you identify areas to work on to improve your overall health and wellness.
Getting a better insight into your overall wellness starts with measuring your body composition and going beyond the number on the scale. You will know whether you need to gain more lean mass or lower body fat percentage to achieve a healthy body composition and a better level of health.
